Belgium midfielder Arthur Vermeeren is close to signing a permanent deal with RB Leipzig after joining on loan from Atletico Madrid this season.

Spanish outlet Relevo reported on Sunday that Atletico Madrid are set to receive an additional €20m from RB Leipzig as the Red Bulls close to completing a permanent deal for Arthur Vermeeren, who has joined from Atletico on loan for the season.

Atletico Madrid paid an initial €18m to sign Vermeeren from Antwerp in January, but the Belgian struggled to adapt to Diego Simeone’s system before the Rojiblancos allowed the 19-year-old to join RB Leipzig on loan for €3m this season with the option to make it permanent for €20m.

RB Leipzig are reportedly considering paying the fee to sign Vermeeren on a permanent basis after the 19-year-old midfielder played a key role for coach Marco Rose’s side, making 19 appearances in all competitions, although he is yet to score or provide an assist.

Although the sale may cause some disappointment among Atletico fans for not seeing Vermeeren’s potential fully realized in the team, the financial income presents an opportunity to strengthen the squad for the upcoming transfer window.
